What Causes Neck Pain?

The cervical spine is designed to provide mobility while supporting your head. Pain can develop when joints, muscles, discs, or nerves become irritated or sensitive.

Neck pain often involves several contributing factors rather than one single problem.

Prolonged Positions

Working at a computer, driving, or looking down at a phone can aggravate neck symptoms, particularly when you remain in the same position for extended periods.

Reduced Neck or Upper-Back Mobility

Restrictions in the cervical or thoracic spine can make turning your head, looking up, or performing everyday activities uncomfortable.

Muscle Weakness or Reduced Endurance

The muscles supporting your neck, shoulders, and upper back need enough strength and endurance to handle daily demands. When their capacity is limited, certain activities may become uncomfortable.

Joint and Disc-Related Conditions

Changes or irritation involving cervical joints and discs can contribute to neck pain. In some cases, irritated nerves may cause symptoms extending into the shoulder, arm, or hand.

Changes in Activity and Physical Demands

New exercise routines, repetitive activities, or sudden increases in workload can sometimes exceed what your neck and surrounding tissues are prepared to tolerate.

What Does Neck Pain Feel Like?

Common symptoms include:

  • Stiffness or difficulty turning your head

  • Pain on one or both sides of the neck

  • Discomfort extending into the shoulders or upper back

  • Headaches associated with neck movement or stiffness

  • Pain when looking up or down

  • Stiffness after sleeping or prolonged computer work

  • Discomfort during exercise or physical activity

  • Sometimes, tingling, numbness, or pain extending into the arm

Symptoms may begin suddenly or develop gradually. Some people experience occasional flare-ups, while others struggle with persistent or recurring discomfort.

How We Evaluate Neck Pain

At Reset Chiropractic, our first priority is determining what's contributing to your symptoms.

Your evaluation may include assessment of:

  • Cervical range of motion and movement limitations

  • Upper-back and shoulder mobility

  • Muscle strength and endurance

  • Repeated movement testing using McKenzie Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) principles

  • Neurological and orthopedic findings when appropriate

  • Activities and positions that reproduce or relieve symptoms

  • Movement patterns related to work, exercise, and everyday activities using Functional Movement Screens (FMS).

Pain felt in the neck can sometimes be related to structures in the shoulder or upper back. Likewise, cervical spine conditions may cause symptoms extending into the arm.

Identifying the likely source of your symptoms is an important part of selecting appropriate treatment.

We use a test–treat–retest approach to help determine which findings are meaningful and whether treatment is improving your symptoms and movement.

How We Treat Neck Pain at Reset Chiropractic

Treatment is individualized based on your examination findings, symptoms, and goals.

Chiropractic and Manual Therapy

When appropriate, chiropractic manipulation or mobilization may help reduce discomfort and improve movement in the cervical and upper thoracic spine.

McKenzie Method (Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy)

Repeated movement testing helps us identify whether specific movements or positions improve your symptoms.  When a helpful movement is identified, we teach you how to use it independently to help manage your condition.

Rehabilitation, Exercise & Functional Movement Screening (FMS)

Neck pain isn't always just a neck problem. Limitations in shoulder mobility, upper-back movement, strength, and stability can contribute to discomfort.  We use the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) when appropriate to identify movement limitations and asymmetries and develop an individualized rehabilitation program focused on improving mobility, strength, endurance, and motor control to help you move more comfortably and return to your activities.

Radial Shockwave Therapy

Radial shockwave therapy may be helpful for muscle-related pain and sensitive trigger points in the lower neck, upper trapezius, and upper back.  This noninvasive treatment delivers mechanical pressure waves to targeted soft tissues and may help reduce pain and tenderness in selected patients.  When appropriate, we combine radial shockwave therapy with targeted exercises and rehabilitation to address both symptoms and contributing movement limitations.

Dry Needling

When muscle-related pain or tension is contributing to symptoms, dry needling may be incorporated into a broader treatment plan alongside exercise and rehabilitation.

Activity and Ergonomic Guidance

You don't necessarily need to stop exercising or completely change how you sit.  We help identify activities and positions that aggravate your symptoms and develop practical strategies to keep you moving while building your tolerance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about neck pain to help you better understand your symptoms and recovery.

Do I Need an X-Ray or MRI for Neck Pain?

Most uncomplicated neck pain does not require imaging before beginning conservative care.  A thorough history and physical examination can often provide enough information to develop an initial treatment plan.  Imaging may be appropriate when examination findings suggest a more serious condition, neurological deficits are progressing, or symptoms fail to respond as expected.

Is Poor Posture Causing My Neck Pain?

There isn't one perfect posture that prevents neck pain.  Certain positions may aggravate symptoms, but remaining in any position for too long can become uncomfortable.  Changing positions regularly, improving movement tolerance, and developing strength and endurance may be more useful than trying to hold a perfect posture all day.

Should I Stretch My Neck When It Hurts?

It depends on what's causing your symptoms.  Gentle movement may be helpful, but aggressive stretching isn't always the best solution. In some cases, specific repeated movements or strengthening exercises may be more appropriate.  An evaluation can help identify which movements are most likely to benefit you.

Why Does My Neck Pain Keep Coming Back?

Recurring symptoms can occur when the factors contributing to discomfort haven't been fully addressed.  Temporary relief from rest, stretching, or massage may not improve underlying mobility limitations, reduced muscle endurance, or difficulty tolerating certain activities.  A comprehensive treatment plan looks at both symptom relief and improving your ability to handle everyday physical demands.

Can I Continue Exercising With Neck Pain?

Often, yes.  Many people can continue physical activity with appropriate modifications. The goal is to find movements and activity levels that are tolerable while gradually rebuilding strength and mobility.  Exercises that consistently worsen symptoms may need to be modified until the underlying problem is better understood.
